The race was initially called the Tradesmen’s Cup and was first staged in 1824, making it one of the oldest races run in Britain.

Originally held over two miles, the race has undergone various changes in distance until settling on its current length in 1994.

The contest was renamed the Chester Cup in 1893. From 2012 it will be known as the Stan James Chester Cup.
